National Identity cards (NIE) and Residencias

Social Security
Everyone needs a social security card to register with a doctor or receive hospital treatment, the old E111 has been phased out and only covered you for visits to Spain and is not intended for people residing here. Contact the National Insurance Contributions office, Benton Park View, Newcastle-upon Tyne, NE98 1NG Tel 0845 915 4811, or 00 44 191 225 4811, you may find you are eligible for cover here in Spain, or you may have to take out private health cover, or if not working for a company that pays social security for you, go self employed.
